A GIFT – SERVING AS A CATECHIST

It’s exciting to serve as a catechist in our religious education program for young children. The role of a catechist is to teach the essentials of Christian faith and morals through word and example. A catechist is called to serve through teaching, witness, prayer, and service to the community.

To me, serving as a catechist is a gift. Think about when you receive a gift for a birthday, anniversary, graduation, or any special occasion.

Typically, receiving a gift brings great joy, excitement, and gratitude. These same emotions are felt when fulfilling the catechist role.

  • It’s exciting to bring the Good News to young children.
  • It’s joyous to witness the “aha” moments when they really do understand, as well as, when they show love and compassion for others.
  • It’s nothing less than amazing to see the students grow in their understanding of how truly good God is and how much they are loved by Him. It’s hard to explain the depth of gratitude that is felt in your heart when you witness all this.

As a catechist and parishioner, my life has been enriched by the many new relationships formed with other catechists and staff who are dedicated to sharing the love that God provides to each of us. The students are totally unaware of the joy they bring to the staff; we all feel it, it’s awe-inspiring.

I recently received a daily inspiration from Dynamic Catholic which said, “God often chooses the most unlikely people to carry out incredible work.” I consider myself an unlikely choice to serve as a catechist, but am forever grateful to be that person to receive the gift of serving as a catechist. It’s such a joyous gift!
