Fifth Sunday of Lent

April 3, 2022

“I consider everything as a loss because of the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have accepted the loss of all things, and I consider them so much rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him... depending on faith to know him and the power of his resurrection...”

How often we hear the expression ‘a win-lose situation.’ As we approach the days ahead, we change this equation, for the paschal mystery for us is a win-win reality. The suffering and death of Jesus, leads to His resurrection, and gaining of new life for us. How easy it is for us to forget that the passion and death of Jesus was not just His effort, but it occurred for us, as we read and reflect on Paul’s words today.

Today Jesus bends down, writes in the sand. As no one cast the first stone but walked away, may we forgive others and hear Jesus tell us: ‘Neither do I condemn you, go and from now on do not sin anymore.’ Before Holy Week, get to confession. That’s our win-win situation.
