Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

August 7, 2022

“Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen. Because of it the ancients were well attested. By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place...By faith he sojourned in the promised land as in a foreign country... by faith he received power to generate even though he was past the normal age...for he thought that the one who had made the promise was trustworthy.”

We call Abraham ‘our father in faith.’ Hebrews recounts his unique role from the book of Genesis. Every week we stand to profess our faith in a loving creating God, a redeeming Savior and a Spirit filled church. This is not just a formula, but an expression of who and what we are. As the passage concludes we too acknowledge ourselves to be strangers and aliens on earth, for those who speak thus show that they are seeking a homeland.

Faith is a virtue, a gift to be lived each and every day. How strong is my faith?
