Third Sunday of Easter

Third Sunday of Easter

May 1, 2022

“So he said to them: ‘cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something.’ So they cast it and were not able to pull it in because of the number of fish. So the disciple, whom Jesus loved, said to Peter, ‘It is the Lord.’...Jesus said to them, ‘Come and have breakfast.’ Jesus came over and took the bread and gave it to them and in like manner the fish. This was the third time...”

This event, added to the conclusion of John's gospel, finds Jesus telling the fishermen what to do. They responded and were successful. Remember this is the Jesus who told Peter he would be the fisher of men. The passage concludes with Jesus giving the promised power and role to Peter of feeding the flock and following Him.

Today, we are to recast our nets, to bring those wavering in the practice of the faith, to return to the Lord. If I do not invite them, perhaps they will never respond. He invites us to another meal with Him, a breakfast. Remember the last supper, the dinner at Simon's house and with Zacchaeus. Jesus wants others to join us at Eucharist. Today, cast your net and invite someone to come home.
