Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time

August 21, 2022

“Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough. After the master of the house has arisen and locked the door, then you will stand outside knocking and saying, ‘Lord, open the door for us.’ He will say to you in reply, ‘I do not know where you are from...I do not know where you are from.’”

Although the gospel is a message of joy, it sometimes provides very sad moments for our reflection. Today we are reminded that it is only in Jesus, and in His name, that we are able to be saved. It is His choice to offer us the gift of salvation.

At the same time I ask myself how well do I know Jesus and His saving power? Is it that important that it provides the direction and meaning for my life? Jesus not only knows us, but He knows our every need. Do I bring them to the Lord? What can I place in His hands to make my Christian life more meaningful? The narrow gate is open for us all today. The gate might be a moment of prayer, an act of charity or kindness to someone else.
